Fruits are a great way to curb a sweet tooth while still getting plenty of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. As opposed to things like candy and soda, fruits are filled with a natural sugar called fructose instead of unhealthy, sugary additives like many of the popular desserts and candies you can buy at the store. Sugar can have a neg

Though too much fruit won’t be the downfall of your otherwise healthy diet, it is still worth paying attention to the sugar content of your favorite fruits. High in sugar fruits can cause more of a spike in your blood sugar than other low-sugar fruits, as well as many other side effects internally and externally. Don’t stop enjoying your favorites because of fruit sugar but consider swapping them out for something with less fructose every once in a while.

High Sugar Fruits

The American Heart Association recommends that men should have no more than 36 grams of added sugar per day and women should have no more than 25 grams per day. It’s important to remember that these recommendations are surrounding added sugar that comes from cookies, candies, and other processed foods. However, watching sugar intake overall is a great practice, even if the sugars are coming from fruit. Some of the fruits that are highest in sugar content are:

  • Watermelon

Everyone’s favorite summer treat, watermelon, is mostly water – it’s in the name! However, an average slice of this treat will be filled with about 17 grams of sugar, too. It’s a fruit that can be eaten in high quantities with a low-calorie count, so if that’s your focus, no worries here.

  • Mangos

Nothing tastes better than a fresh, juicy mango but this would fall in the “fruits with super-high sugar” category. Just one mango racks up 46 grams of sugar – we’ve figured out why they’re so sweet and delicious. Try sharing this one with a friend to avoid packing too much sugar into your day.

  • Bananas

If you’re asking yourself, “Is banana a high-sugar fruit?” The answer is that it’s probably not as much as you’d think. One medium banana has about 14 grams of sugar, so if you’re concerned, opt for small bananas or eat half and save the rest for a smoothie.

  • Grapes

Grapes are so fun to eat but they are relatively high in sugar. Fruits – like grapes – that have 23 grams of sugar in one cup are best enjoyed in moderation. These tiny, delicious fruits are very high in sugar.
